Cell phones being one of the most popular things on the earth do come in handy. While I have chosen not to participate in cell phone photography, I understand the reasoning behind it. There are moments captured that will remain forever and we can thank the cell phone for that. They can do many things particularly when it comes to Facebook and sharing with friends and family.
In the fine art of being resourceful, a selfie can sure take the bite out of the worry and cost of printing. Those days really are over for most part. Truth be told, our younger generation probably doesn’t have a clue as to how lucky they are. We might as well join together and let the almighty cell phone camera do the work all the while thinking and budgeting for a professional photo session.
As you choose this device to assist you with so many things including a self portrait aka selfie, you may as well put all the love into it that you can and herein are the tips to creating a better self-portrait.
Look at professional portraits that you like and tell me what you see? Most likely you will say that you like the photo of the person and when asked why, you might realize that there is not alot of extra stuff in the background. And you are right, this very thing creates a much more appealing professional photo. In some cases there are times when the background helps tell the story. But for a professional headshot, a clean background is much more effective. Alot of planning goes into my photography and it is not as easy as one might think. There are decisions to be made.

Now that we have the wheels turning, we have to decide where we want to take our photo, inside or outside? Remember, you are the star of the show, so be sure to position yourself as such. If photographing yourself outside, please don’t pick the most pretty bush to position yourself in front of because we want ALL EYES ON YOU. Nor do we want trees limbs merging from behind thy lovely hairdo! We want a location free of clutter, somewhat smooth possibly a white-washed wall free of debris. If you can find a smooth white background or a smooth black background that is perfect in my opinion. Study that background carefully and looks at its lovely details. This is your opportunity to really see what is before you. The longer you look the more you will see. You will be positioning yourself up close and personal, so ensure your background is clean.
Since clean backgrounds are hard to find, you might think about what you have on hand that would provide a smooth clean background. If you have a piece of black fabric this would be ideal. Now comes the iron! That’s right, iron! You might now be realizing that all of this takes alot of effort on your behalf and well, you are right! It is alot of effort! Welcome to my world! And don’t forget to lint roll either! And find something to hang that fabric with.
If you are familiar with Photoshop and know how to select the background and remove it, you are good to go! You can shoot your happy selfie anywhere! And edit later.
Next think about how you position yourself in the photo. I don’t know about you, but if I am looking at photos of people, I want to see their face. Get as up close and personal with yourself as you are able! One of the primary issues that come up with people when being photographed is that they see all the detail of their lovely faces created by their unique DNA! Here is your opportunity to CELEBRATE IT! LOVE THYSELF and let the ego go by the wayside. Because the truth of the matter is, most people aren’t going to sit down and review every detail of your face the way you will.
And in order for you to feel better about that photo whether selfie or not, you must dress for the occasion. Since you should take the photo from the bustline up, if the rest of you wants to go HIPPIE, go for it! What the people don’t see won’t hurt them! But if you are trying to capture a professional self-portrait for Linked-In and the like, by all means, put your fancy DUDS on!
That’s all for now!
Thanks for taking the time!
